The Suroît hospital never ceases to overflow!

Patients waiting in the emergency room
The staff of the Surooît hospital, in Montérégie, denounce the untenable situation in its emergency rooms. Since the beginning of 2014, the occupancy rate of stretchers has hovered around 300%. It even reached 305% on 13 January. They are preparing to call on their management, the Health and Social Services Agency, and the Ministry of Health and Social Services to correct the situation.

The employees of the hospital located in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield are overwhelmed, just like their emergencies. Nurses complain that they are understaffed and that they have to work overtime.
“The critical situation has been going on since September-October”, laments Florence Thomas, union advisor at the FIQ (Interprofessional Health Federation), “there is nothing that
advance”. She explains that the regulatory limit of 22 stretchers is far exceeded to reach 50 or even 60.
“Half of the stretchers are occupied by patients waiting for a family doctor consultation.” — Florence Thomas, union advisor at the FIQ
Management recognizes that many patients need long-term care but occupy emergency beds due to lack of space elsewhere.
A situation with multiple causes
According to the FIQ, the emergency situation at Hôpital du Surooît is multifactorial: lack of family doctors in the region, lack of planning for regional needs and lack of balance of supply. The significant population growth in the region is not helping. Several patients from the Vaudreuil-Dorion region go to the Surooît hospital due to lack of service.
Increase in population (between 2001 and 2011)
- Salaberry-de-Valleyfield: + 54%
- Vaudreuil-Dorion: + 67%
